Classical favourites, traditional Irish tunes and Connemara-inspired modern-day classic – all on the programme this evening from the RTÉ CO, Sir James Galway, Zoë Conway, Bróna Cahill and David Brophy.
Sir James Galway joins the RTÉ CO for Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2, in D, Bach’s Badinerie, Marais’ Le Basque, Gossec’s Tambourin and The Star of the County Down.
Bill Whelan’s Inishlacken was named after an island off the Galway coast and was inspired by the composer’s living in Connemara and by his many visits to the now deserted island. It’s a concerto for two violins, one in the classical style – played this evening by Bróna Cahill – and one traditional – played by Zoë Conway.
And the RTÉ CO takes centre stage itself for Johann Strauss’s overture to Die Fledermaus and Emperor Waltz and Victor Herbert’s overture to the comic opera Eileen, composed in 1916.
