String Quartet in A minor, Op. 132
If Beethoven’s relationship with God was more complex than Bach’s and his faith in the divine less orthodox, he was no less convinced of a higher, spiritual power. His personal credo rested in a belief that music could transcend matters of mere flesh and reach ‘above the canopy of the stars’ towards the spiritual.
Profoundly deaf and with his health failing, Beethoven completed his A minor String Quartet (Op. 132) in the aftermath of a severe month-long illness. On the score of its deeply moving Andante, he inscribed the dedication ‘Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit’ – ‘Holy Thanksgiving song of a recovered person to the Deity’.
