    Violin Concerto / 38’

Do not miss this! The phenomenal Maxim Vengerov – described by The Washington Post as ‘one of the most brilliant violinists you’ll ever hear’ – makes a welcome return to the RTÉ NSO to perform one of the sweetest and most uplifting concertos ever written.

Brahms’ only Violin Concerto is a powerful mix of melody and muscle, its formidable technical demands for the songful solo instrument matched by the graceful eloquence of the orchestra in a gripping, confessional, celebratory conversation without words. Brimming over with soaring passions, baleful beauty and cloudbursts of melody and colour, it is a full-blown Romantic spectacle that can only be described as a masterpiece.

Better known as the composer of countless memorable film scores during Hollywood’s Golden Age, Erich Wolfgang Korngold was a child prodigy hailed by Mahler as ‘a genius! A genius!’ whose orchestral music and operas were the toast of Europe before the outbreak of the Second World War. His Sinfonietta was the first large-scale orchestral work he completed. A ravishing display of decorative musical threads woven together with all the light charm, stirring drama and image-rich sensuality of his greatest film scores, it’s a rapturous, rousing display all the more remarkable for having been composed when Korngold had just turned 15.
