A musical gift that keeps on giving, an exciting and beguiling violin concerto and one the most hypnotic of all orchestral jewels conjuring the exotic fantasies of The Arabian Nights.

RTÉ lyric fm’s first-ever composer-in-residence Elaine Agnew composed Make a Wish for the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in 2009 to celebrate the station’s 10th birthday. As it reaches another milestone this year – its 21st birthday – a perfect opportunity to hear again an imaginative, involving piece inspired by the blowing out of candles on a cake.

“A brilliant young violinist with a commanding appearance and stage presence, and a dazzling performance technique” (Classic FM), Nemanja Radulović joins for Aram Khachaturian’s exhilarating Violin Concerto. Steeped in the folk flavours of his native Armenia, it’s a work of ravishing romance and heart-stopping melodies that makes the violin sing with nightingale-like brilliance.

How to describe Rimsky-Korsakov’s once heard, never forgotten Scheherazade? Laced with heady perfumes and Oriental accents, infused by colours that dance, dart and dazzle, lit up by gorgeous, earworm tunes and driven forward by dramas unfolding with compelling directness… it’s as magical, mysterious and mesmerising as the fabled tales of One Thousand and One Nights that inspired it.
