    Requiem / 81’

A late-Victorian masterpiece, Charles Villiers Stanford’s awe-inspiring Requiem combines faith and friendship in music of searing, soaring emotions as grand as they are intimate.

An influential teacher of a generation of composers that included Vaughan Williams, Holst and Howells, Dubliner Stanford also achieved fame as ‘the father of English Choral music’. Of his more then 30 works for choir and orchestra, the Requiem stands out for the ambition of its scale and the exquisite, heartfelt poetry of its execution.

Composed in tribute to the revered painter, and Stanford’s personal friend, Lord Frederic Leighton and first performed 103 years ago, the Requiem has a long relationship with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, whose world premiere recording (now on the Naxos label) was ‘strongly recommended’ by MusicWeb International who declared ‘it will prove to be a revelation for many’.

An eloquent meeting of faiths – the text drawn from the traditional Roman Catholic Mass for the dead, Stanford a devout Protestant – the Requiem is a stirring experience, the vocal writing a thing of wonder as it moves from song-like simplicity to operatic ardency, the always discreet orchestration the product of a master technician at the top of his craft.

Former RTÉ NSO Principal Conductor Gerhard Markson returns to lead the orchestra, the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir and four star Irish soloists in music of loving reverence to surrender to and enjoy.
