Four new concerts announced for The National Symphony Orchestra In Concert

Sundays 15 November to 6 December. RTÉ One, Sundays, 10am and RTÉ Player

RTÉ today (Friday 6 November) announced full information of four additional programmes in The National Symphony Orchestra In Concert, the new Sunday morning series on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player featuring selected works from RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra LIVE, the orchestra’s current series at the National Concert Hall which is live-streamed on RTE.ie/Culture and broadcast live on RTÉ lyric fm.

Covering weeks five to eight of the 10-week series these include works from all three concerts with Chief Conductor Jaime Martín, including Falla’s El amor brujo (Love the Magician) performed by flamenco artist Rebeca Sanchez who stole the hearts and minds of so many with her compelling interpretation, and that from the performance on 30 October conducted by Proinnsías Ó Duinn.

Speaking about his work with RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra LIVE in October, Jaime Martín said: “Music always finds a way, even in the most difficult of times, to offer comfort and hope and optimism for the future. At this time of uncertainty, I want to programme music that will be like a warm bath for our audiences, for people who have been separated from each other for so long…Now, it’s a moment for offering comfort, for speaking to the heart.”

Jaime conducts movements from Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony (Sunday 15 November); that which he describes as “optimistic music”, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, movements from Mozart’s Divertimento in D with Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 ‘Classical’ (Sunday 22 November); followed by an all-Spanish programme, works by Falla. Granados and Chapí to bring “a little bit of light and warmth to these cold and gloomy times” including the Suite No. 1 from Falla’s El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) and El amor brujo (Love the Magician) with flamenco artist Rebeca Sanchez. (Sunday 29 November)

The programme with Proinnsías Ó Duinn includes Schubert’s Symphony No.5, a work which Proinnsías conducted on his debut with the Radió Éireann Symphony Orchestra in 1962, as well as Fauré’s Pavane and movements from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a work he describes as one “that brings to life magical characters with all the skill of a painter. And it’s good fun. We need a bit of that now.
