RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra announces
RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra LIVE

New series live-streamed worldwide on RTÉ Culture
and broadcast live on RTÉ lyric fm

The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will return to live performance on Friday 11 September with RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra LIVE, a new series of 12 concerts live-streamed worldwide in HD on RTÉ Culture (www.rte.ie/culture) and broadcast live on RTÉ lyric fm on Fridays at 7pm. All concerts will be offered to the European Broadcasting Union for broadcasting across the European network.

The first three concerts will come from the stage of the National Concert Hall and will be presented by RTÉ lyric fm’s Paul Herriott. Plans for the remaining concerts in the series will be announced in the near future. They include three concerts in October with the orchestra’s Chief Conductor Jaime Martín who will make a welcome return to work with the orchestra.

In keeping with current public health guidelines and requirements around permitted numbers and social distancing, the series will feature a symphony orchestra of no more than 37 players and performances will take place without an audience.

Programming has been designed to take full advantage of the rich body of works for smaller orchestral forces and to offer opportunities to as many Irish artists as possible.

The opening concert will see David Brophy conducting works including Mozart’s second flute concerto with RTÉ NSO principal flautist Catriona Ryan as soloist and Beethoven’s fourth symphony in the 250th anniversary of his birth. For Culture Night on Friday 18 September, Gavin Maloney conducts works including Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with the orchestra’s former principal clarinet player John Finucane as soloist and Mendelssohn’s ‘Italian’ Symphony No. 4. On Friday 25 September David Brophy returns for a concert dedicated to music by Irish composers from both past and present: Arthur Duff, John Kinsella, Mícheál Ó Suilleabháinn and Neil Martin.

Speaking about this new series, Anthony Long, RTÉ NSO General Manager said: “Making music together and with guest artists and performing for audiences are what orchestras are all about. We are thrilled to get back to rehearsing and performing for an audience. Changed times require new approaches and we return with the same determination to bring audiences some of the greatest music from past and present. This series of popular and classical music has been designed for a broad audience and to ensure the involvement of Irish artists and our Chief Conductor Jaime Martín. Like everyone in the arts and culture sector, we greatly regret the absence of the venue audience but are delighted that, through the combined forces of the RTÉ NSO, RTÉ lyric fm and RTÉ Culture, we can reach you, our audience, wherever you are.”
