Six more concerts for RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra LIVE

Fridays 11 June to 16 July 2021

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra LIVE continues on Friday 11 June on rte.ie/culture with the first of six concerts taking place weekly until Friday 16 July. Concerts range from Baroque masterpieces by Bach and Handel to works by Copland, Stravinsky, Arvo Pärt and Max Richter and a concert of works by Irish composers Marian Ingoldsby, Gráinne Mulvey and Jane O’Leary. David Brophy, John Finucane, Robert Houlihan, Gavin Maloney and Peter Whelan conduct with RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra musicians – Fionnuala Hunt, Elaine Clark, Matthew Billing and Martin Johnson – stepping forward as soloists.

Spotlight on three of Ireland’s finest composers, featuring the distinctive voices of Marian Ingoldsby (Winter Sun), Gráinne Mulvey (Latitude 52 world premiere) and Jane O’Leary (from the flatirons). Robert Houlihan conducts. (11 June).

Two composers who changed the course of 20th-century music – the ‘Dean of American Music’ Aaron Copland (Fanfare for the Common Man) and arch-agent provocateur Igor Stravinsky (Symphonies of Wind Instruments)– with a diverting excursion to the idyll of Dvořák’s Bohemian homeland (Serenade for Wind Instruments). John Finucane conducts. (18 June).

In the run-up to Independence Day, two glorious, melody-filled works by Aaron Copland: Appalachian Spring and the jazz-accented Clarinet Concerto with Matthew Billing, RTÉ NSO Principal Clarinet as soloist. David Brophy conducts. (25 June)

Strings and winds to the fore in three pieces of enchanting delicacy and luxurious harmonies: Charles Gounod’s Petite Symphony, Ibert’s Concerto for Cello and Wind Instruments with RTÉ NSO cello section leader Martin Johnson as soloist, and Richard Strauss’ Serenade in E flat. Gavin Maloney conducts. (2 July).

Two Baroque masterpieces by Bach (Violin Concerto in E major) and Handel (Water Music Suite No. 1). RTÉ NSO Co-Leader Elaine Clark is the soloist. Peter Whelan conducts. (9 July).

Two modern masterpieces: Arvo Pärt’s heart-rending homage to Benjamin Britten, and Max Richter’s dazzling re-imagining of Vivaldi with violinist and RTÉ NSO Leader Fionnuala Hunt as soloist. (16 July).
