RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra LIVE returns to National Concert Hall and live audiences

Fridays 5 and 19 November

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra LIVE returns to the National Concert Hall and live audiences in November with two concerts conducted by John Wilson and Chief Conductor Jaime Martín respectively. Both concerts will take place at 7.30pm and both will also be live-streamed on rte.ie/culture and broadcast live on RTÉ lyric fm. Booking opens at the National Concert Hall on Monday 1 November at 10am.

On Friday 5 November, John Wilson, ‘a passionate advocate of English classical music second to none’ (The Times) conducts an all-English programme of works by Elgar, Britten and Jonathan Dove.

The Four Sea Interludes from Britten’s breakthrough opera Peter Grimes opens the programme and will be followed by Jonathan Dove’s ‘miniature opera for the trombone’, Stargazer, a contemporary classic that casts its eyes towards the heavens with the brilliant trombonist and former BBC Young Musician of the Year, Peter Moore as soloist. The concert closes with Elgar’s masterpiece Enigma Variations, a blend of Victorian grandeur and Edwardian grace and a cornerstone of the English repertoire.

Chief Conductor Jaime Martin returns on Friday 19 November for works by Shostakovich, Rodrigo and Elaine Agnew.

The concert opens with Elaine Agnew’s Make A Wish, commissioned to celebrate RTÉ lyric fm’s 10th birthday in May 2009 and noted by the composer as a work “inspired by the custom of making a wish when you blow out the candles on a birthday cake.” Rodrigo’s sun-scorched Concierto Aranjuez, one of the greatest – and most beautiful – concertos for any instrument follows with Pablo Sáinz-Villegas, hailed by Billboard magazine as ‘the global ambassador of Spanish guitar’, as soloist. The evening closes with the towering orchestral showcase that is Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, Shostakovich’s hugely successful response to the suspicions and criticism of the Soviet authorities that threatened his career and his life.

Patron and player safety is paramount as the orchestra returns to concerts with audiences. Safety measures include the showing of a valid vaccination/recovery cert with photo ID in order to gain entry to the venue, the wearing of masks at all times including during the performance and distancing measures between individual customer bookings.
