‘They shall not grow old’ – Remembrance Concert

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

These lines from Robert Laurence Binyon’s poem ‘For the Fallen’ are now inextricably linked to ceremonies of remembrance. There is a rare performance of Elgar’s setting of the poem in a special Remembrance Concert marking the centenary of the signing of the Armistice.

The concert by the choirs of St Patrick’s Cathedral and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra conducted by David Leigh also features Bax’s In Memoriam, composed just a few months after the Easter Rising and inscribed In memory of Patrick Pearse. Completing the evening, the German Requiem, with its focus on hope and consolation – Brahms described it as ‘a human Requiem’. All in St Patrick’s Cathedral on Saturday 10 November.
